Wir freuen uns, die Serie 'half awake and half asleep in the water' der japanischen Künstlerin Asako Narahashi erstmals in einer Einzelausstellung in Europa vorzustellen.

Die Serie der 1959 in Tokyo geborenen Künstlerin ist seit dem Jahr 2000 an den Küsten Japans entstanden und zeigt in ungewöhnlichen Landschaftsfotografien einen neuen Blick auf das Land. Halb im Wasser stehend oder schwimmend hat Asako Narahashi die moderne Zivilisation sowie Wahrzeichen Japans, wie den Berg Fuji, in Verbindung mit dem Wasser fotografiert. Die Ausstellung zeigt eine Auswahl von Farbfotografien aus der Serie sowie bislang noch unpublizierte schwarz-weiß Fotografien.

Durch den Standort der Fotografin entsteht eine unerwartete Verbindung zwischen Wasser und Land. Mit dem sich in jedem Bild wandelnden Meer im Vordergrund entsteht eine neue Perspekteve auf die Uferlandschaften.

Der Titel der Serie verweist auf ein ambivalentes Gefühl, das von den Bildern vermittelt wird. Die Fotografien beschreiben einen Zustand zwischen dem angenehmen Gefühl im Wasser zu Schweben und zugleich Gefahr zu laufen den Gewalten des Wasser ausgeliefert zu sein.

'Die Bilder überzeugen nicht nur aufgrund der ungewöhnlichen Blickrichtung, sondern zudem durch eine besondere Ambivalenz und Poesie. Faszination und Furcht, Durchlässigkeit und Härte - das uns stets umgebende Wasser bleibt in Narahashis Fotografie etwas Geheimnisvolles, letztlich Unergründbares. Die Arbeit der Künstlerin wurde im vergangenen Jahr durch die von Martin Parr herausgegebene Monografie 'half awake and half asleep in the water' international bekannt. Arbeiten aus der Serien waren in den letzten Jahren in Gruppenaustellungen im In- und Ausland zu sehen, unter anderem in diesem Frühjahr in 'Heavy Light. Kurzbiographie:
1959 in Tokyo geboren. 1989 Abschluss in Bildender Kunst an der Waseda Universität. 1990 Gründung der unabhängigen Fotogalerie '03Fotos' in Tokyo. Von 1996-2000 Herausgeberin der Fotozeitschrift 'Main' zusammen mit Miyako Ishiuchi.
